Kate and I started with the 5:30 a.m. sun in Seattle, were in the car by 6:15 a.m., wound our way into the clouds around Tacoma, then up across and down the South end of the Olympic Peninsula, across to foggy Aberdeen, out for a hike to the flats of the Sand Piper trail, then back in the car and to the other side of Gray's Harbor, down the loop road to Westport and Long Beach Island for a crab leg lunch followed by ice cream on the beach, a hike to the top of North Head Lighthouse and a fine chat with the ranger at the top, back down the stairs and into the car to zoom across the broad and restless Columbia, then down down down the Oregon coast, past views and vistas and pullouts, a brief stop for tasting at an accidental Oregon winery along the way, then through mist and rain and pine tree forests, through Hebo and Lincoln and many small water-born towns, finally peaking at the aptly-named Foul Weather Point, descending into the teeth of the wind and finally into the warmly-lit rooms of our rest for the night.
